BAC – Dean McStraw with a fantastic Rainbow caught at the Corbet Lough on 25 July 2020

The reports indicate that following the recent rain and a couple of good spates down the River that the River is fishing very well at the moment. Wilson Clinghan has been catching great wild brownies up to about 2lbs. Eugene Curran has also caught a couple of salmon. The Club encourages anglers to fish responsibly on the River and practise catch and release to protect the River’s wild indigenous trout and the salmon runs. On Saturday 1 August the Club’s competition anglers held their annual outing to Spelga Dam. Eugene Curran won the Linda Clinghan Shield with Donald McClearn and Joe Curran in 2nd and 3rd place respectively. In the Juvenile category Sam Curran won the Wilson Clinghan Cup. The Club’s next competition is at the Corbet Lough on Saturday 15 August when the Adult anglers will be fishing for the Jordan Cup and the Juvenile anglers will be fishing for the Corbet Cup. On the same day and also at the Corbet Lough the Club’s Junior anglers will be fishing for the Dr Cocks Shield. During the past week (w/c 3 August) the fishing has slowed down at the Corbet Lough and as a consequnce there has been a reduction in fishing effort. The best reported catches are as follows. On Wednesday 5 August Cyril McAllister took 4 nice fish when he was fly fishing from the shore. On Thursday 6 August Gerard Lyness was fishing from a boat and he caught 9 good fish and hooked and lost as many more. On Friday 7 August Geoff Hylands and Leonard Ervine had an afternoon boat session and they had 8 fish between them to the boat. In addition the worm anglers are still catching plenty of fish. The fishing continued to be challenging during w/c 10 August. The best reported catches during the week were Brendan Downey taking 4 fish and missing another 4 fish during a boat fishing session on Friday 14 August. Then on Saturday 15 August Aidan Lavery and Eddie Harris had 5 fish during a morning’s boat fishing. On Saturday 15 August the Club’s competition anglers fished at the Corbet Lough for the Jordan Cup. Martin Dynes won the Jordan Cup with a good bag of fish weighing 3lbs 6ozs. Sam Grant and Davy McCandless were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The next competition is back at the Corbet Lough on 29 August. The Adult anglers will be fishing for the Shooter Cup and the Juveniles will be fishing for the Joe Curran Cup. The Junior anglers will also be fishing at the Corbet Lough for the Corbet Junior Cup on 29 August. The fishing at the Corbet Lough received a further boost with a fresh stocking in the early part of w/c 17 August 2020. However the unseasonable weather this week has deterred many anglers from venturing out. On Friday 21 August Brendan Downey enjoyed a great morning’s boat fishing with 5 fish up to about 3lbs to the boat. He also hooked and lost a number of other fish including a cracking fish which took him to the backing. The fishing on the River Bann continues to be very good. Brian Molloy, Wilson Clinghan, John Johnston and some of the other regular river anglers have been catching great wild brownies of 2lb plus. On Saturday 22 August The Silver Butchers held an outing at the Corbet Lough. Most of the anglers took fish with the best boat catching 19 fish. On Thursday 27 August Darrell McKinley and Stevie Rea had a great morning’s boat fishing at the Corbet with 14 fish between them. On Friday 28 August there was a strong NNW wind blowing down the Corbet Lough and this delayed the boats being permitted to venture out until late morning. Whenever they did get out Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields had a good session with 8 fish between them to the boat. David Dowey, Lurgan also enjoyed a good boat session with a few nice fish. On Saturday 29 August Stevie and Andrew Rea had a fantastic boat fishing session taking 56 fish including some cracking brownies. Stevie and Andrew fish barbless hooks and catch and release. Indeed they release most of the fish from the net without even having do take them into the boat. Gary Chivers, Lisburn and his boat partner also had a great session with over 20 fish between them to the boat. On the 29 August there were also three Club competitions held at the Corbet Lough. Sam Grant won the Shooter Cup for adults with a nice brace of fish weighing 5.247lbs. Wilson Clinghan and Noel Burns were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Jaydun Smyth won the Corbet Junior Cup for junior anglers with a great brace of fish weighing 5.141lbs. Elijah Parks was 2nd with a nice bag of fish weighing 1.768lbs. The next Club competitions are at the Corbet Lough on Saturday 5th September. The adult anglers will be fishing for the Gowdy Cup and the juveniles will be fishing for the Superfry Cup. On Bank Holiday Monday 31 August the Corbet was very busy with both boat and shore anglers. However the recent heavy rain and strong winds had left the water murky. There were a few daddies on the water but the fish were not on them and the fishing was challenging. Although most anglers took a fish or two the best reported catch on the day was by Donald McClearn and Joe McCandless who were boat fishing and had 6 fish between them.
