Fishing Report – May 2021

BAC – A great Rainbow caught by a juvenile angler boat fishing at the Corbet Lough on 20 June 2020

The month started with northerly / easterly winds giving a very cold snap for this time of the year. On Monday 3 May there was a good turn out of anglers to fish in the Jos Willis Cup competition at the Corbet Lough. Joe Curran won the cup with a great bag of fish weighing 5.05lbs. Keith Gibson was in 2nd place with a good brace of fish weighing 4.66lbs with Sam Grant in 3rd place with his fish weighing 4.65lbs. Geoff Hylands caught a beautiful Rainbow of over 4lbs but unfortunately he didn’t have a second fish at the weigh-in. On Friday 7 May the conditions were pleasant and there was a good turn out of boat and shore anglers on the Corbet Lough. Gary Chivers and Raymond Cherry from Lisburn had a good boat session with 5 fish to the boat. Eddie Harris and Aidan Lavery from Lisburn were also boat fishing and although they got a number of takes they only got one fish to the boat. Geoff Hylands was also boat fishing and he took 4 nice fish, including a great Rainbow of about 4.5lbs. Brendan Downey was fly fishing from the shore and he had some great sport with 4 nice fish, including a beautiful Brownie of about 2.5lbs. On Monday 10 May Leonard Ervine and Geoff Hylands were fly fishing from the shore and they had 6 fish between them up to about 4lbs. On Tuesday 11 May Brendan Downey was fly fishing from the shore and he had 3 nice fish, including a cracking Rainbow of over 4lbs. Over the weekend 14 – 16 May there was a number of very big fish caught at the Corbet Lough. On Friday 14 May Wilson Clinghan was fly fishing from the shore and he took a fantastic Rainbow of about 7lbs. On Saturday 15 May Darrell McKinley had a great morning’s boat fishing. He had 10 fish to the boat including a cracking Rainbow of 6lbs. On Saturday 15 May there was a great turn out of anglers at the Corbet to fish for the Jim Ledlie Cup. There was some fantastic fish and bags of fish at the weigh-in. Roger McClements won the Cup with a cracking brace of fish weighing 9.744lbs, which included a very big Rainbow of almost 8lbs. Darryl Alexander was in 2nd place with a brace of fish weighing 8.210lbs with a beautiful Rainbow of about 5lbs. Leonard Ervine was in 3rd place with a brace of fish weighing 7.795lbs which also included a big Rainbow of about 5lbs. Geoff Hylands also had a fine Rainbow of 5lbs but again he didn’t have a second fish for the weigh-in. The Club’s next competition is at the Corbet Lough on Friday 28 May, 6:30pm – 11:00pm for the Patsy McGivern Shield and Trophy. The draw has also been made for the Boat Anglers competition at the Corbet Lough on 18 / 19 June 2021. The boat partners have been drawn as follows:- Sam Grant and Darryl Alexander; Wilson Clinghan and Joe Curran; Keith Gibson and Roger McClements; Milne Jones and Dessie Graham; Colin Crothers and Geoff Hylands; Trevor Jones and Patrick Curran; Mark Ferguson and Martin Dynes. On Sunday 16 May Darrell McKinley and his boat partner had a great session at the Corbet with 16 fish to the boat. The evening of Wednesday 19 May was very pleasant at the Corbet with patches of calm water and some others with a nice corduroy ripple. There was also a decent rise to a hatch of buzzers. There was a number of anglers on the shore and they all appeared to be catching regulary. Nigel Beckett and Davy McCandless were taking fish on the fly in the front bay from the fishing stands. Malachy McAleenan was also taking fish on the fly in the front bay. Leonard Ervine and Geoff Hylands were catching regularly on the fly down at Bruce’s Point. Keith Gibson was further down the Lough and he was also catching regularly on the fly. On Friday 21 May Alan Hamilton was fly fishing from the shore at the Corbet Lough and he caught a cracking Rainbow of 8lbs 8ozs which he sportingly returned. On Saturday 22 May Robert Weir and Gary McFadden had a great boat session at the Corbet. They caught 7 fish between them and Gary had a great Rainbow of 6lbs. William Cochrane was also out boat fishing and he had great sport with 5 fish to the boat and he had a number of other pulls and tugs. On Thursday 27 May Darrell McKinley and Stevie Rea took a morning’s boat fishing Corbet Lough and they also had great sport with 20 fish, which included a good number of quality brownies, up to 5lbs. On Friday evening 28 May the Club’s competition anglers competed for the Patsy McGivern Shield at the Corbet Lough. David McCandless won the Shield with a great bag of fish weighing 5.54lbs. Sam Grant and Leonard Ervine were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Club’s next competition is for the Straghan Cup and the Coburn Cup at Lough Melvin on Saturday 5 June 2021. On Saturday 29 May Andrew and Stevie Rea had a great boat session at the Corbet Lough with 35 fish between them. With the further easing of travel restrictions during the past couple of weeks some local anglers have been ‘chasing the mayfly’ with day trips to some of the big loughs in the west. David McCullough took a nice fish on Lough Erne. There have been a number of great catches on Lough Sheelin. Freddy Steele has taken fish up to 7lbs. Eugene Curran and Richie Jamison have had great catches up to 6lbs. Andy Holden and Sam Watt have taken a number of fish up to 5lbs and Partick Curran and Geoff Hylands have had some good fish up to 4lbs.
