BAC – Darryl Alexander caught this great brownie of 3lbs on the fly at the Corbet Lough on 1 March 2022

The season opened with some fine pleasant spring weather and decent fishing conditions. The water at the Corbet Lough is gin clear and there are plenty of fish, especially the Brown Trout, feeding hard. On the 1 March there was a good turn out of anglers at the Corbet Lough. Darryl Alexander and Stephen Rea had beautiful Browns of about 3lbs on the fly. Wilson Clinghan caught 4 fish on the fly. Paul McKinstry and Leonard Ervine also took fish on the fly. Brendan Campbell had 3 nice Browns on the spinner and David Wilson had one on the worm. Eugene Curran made a more traditional start to the season by fishing the River Bann on the opening morning. He had some great sport with 8 Browns up to about 1lb on the fly. On Thursday 3 March Stevie Ferris was at the Corbet and he had 3 fish on the fly. The Club’s opening competition in the 2022 season for the Bobby Blakley Cup was fished at the Corbet Lough on 5 March. There was a good turn out of anglers and seven of them caught the bag limit. The top rod on the day was Andrew Rea with 10 fish including a great Rainbow of just under 5lbs. Andrew won the Bobby Blakley Cup with Darryl Alexander in 2nd place and Lenoard Ervine and Roger McClements in joint 3rd place. The Club’s next competition is back at the Corbet Lough on 19 March when the adults will fish for the Dominic Downey Cup and the juveniles will fish for the Paddy Downey Cup. On Sunday 6 March Andrew Rea returned to the Corbet Lough. He fished an early morning session and in freezing conditions he had 5 fish up to 4lbs on the fly. On Monday 7 March Geoff Hylands and Leonard Ervine had a good afternoon’s sport at the Corbet taking a number of fish on the fly. Geoff had a beautiful Brownie of about 3.5lbs. On Thursday 10 March Eric Graham and Dessy Copeland had some good sport at the Corbet with Eric also taking a nice Brownie on the fly. There is no doubt that the Club’s ‘brown trout catch and release’ policy is really paying dividends with some great brown trout having being caught already this season. All anglers are reminded to treat the brown trout with extra care to ensure that these fish can go on to become really big fish in the future seasons. On Monday 14 March Robert Gault was fly fishing in the top bay and he had some great sport including catching a big Rainbow of over 4lbs. Wilson Clinghan also had a couple of nice fish on the fly further down the Lough. On Wednesday 16 March Wilson Clinghan enjoyed some good fly fishing in the late afternoon with 6 fish to the net. On 17 March there was a great turn out of anglers, including Stevie Ferris, Lisburn Sam Grant, Portadown Henry McKnight, Trevor Jones, Lurgan Eamonn Rodgers, Cabra Geoff Hylands, Lenonard Ervine and Wilson Clinghan, at the Lough and they all enjoyed some great sport. On Saturday 19 March the Club’s competition anglers fished at the Corbet Lough for the Dominic Downey Cup. Although the fishing was challenging six anglers caught the bag limit. At the weigh-in Andrew Rea took the Cup, with Trevor Jones in 2nd place and Kevin Conwell in 3rd place. The Club’s next competitions are also at the Corbet Lough on Saturday 2 April. The adults will fish for the Bruce Carson Trophy, the juveniles will fish for the Carson Cup and the juniors will fish for the Bill Gault Glazing Cup. On Sunday 20 March Leonard Ervine was fishing the Corbet Lough and he took a fantastic brown trout of about 5lbs on the fly. It was a beautiful fish with a big full tail and great markings (See Gallery Page). On Thursday 24 March Stevie Ferris was fishing the fly at the Corbet Lough and he took 6 fish, including 3 fish that were at least 3lbs. Noel Burns was also at the Corbet for a few hours and he took 5 fish on the fly. On Tuesday 29 March Brendan Downey enjoyed some great fly fishing at the Corbet Lough. He had 3 fish including a beautiful over-wintered Rainbow of about 3.5lbs.
