Fishing Report – May 2022

BAC – Stevie Rea with awesome Rainbow of 9lbs 11ozs caught whilst boat fishing at the Corbet Lough on 30 April 2022. Stevie sportingly returned this great fish.

This month has started with the Corbet fishing very well and some big fish being caught and reported. On Sunday 1 May Keith and Sandra Moffitt had a great boat session with 22 fish between them. Sandra caught a fantastic Rainbow of 6lbs 8ozs. On Monday 2 May Matt Shields and Lance McCarthy had a great morning’s boat fishing at the Corbet with 12 fish between them. Raymond Cherry and Aidan Lavery also had a good morning’s boat fishing with 10 fish between them. On Monday 2 May there was also a great turn out of the Club’s competition anglers at the Corbet to fish for the Jos Willis Cup. At the weigh-in Leonard Ervine took the Cup with a great brace of Rainbows weighing almost 7lbs. Leonard’s best fish was a beautiful Rainbow of almost 4lbs 4ozs. Noel Burns and Joe Curran were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Club’s next competitions are at the Corbet Lough on 14 May. The adults will fish for the Jim Ledlie Cup, the juveniles will fish for the Banbridge Angling Club Cup and the juniors will fish for the Percy Trophy. On Saturday 7 May the NIE Networks Energise Your Life fishing group held their inaugural fishing outing at the Corbet Lough. By all accounts everyone had a great day and a number of them, including local angler Derek Curran, caught some good fish from both the boats and the shore. The Club look forward to welcoming the NIE Networks anglers back again to the Corbet Lough in the near future. On Sunday 8 May Sam Watt and Andy Holden fished the Corbet Lough and they had 5 fish between them to the boat. Aidan Lavery and Gary McClements were also on the Corbet and they had 5 fish between them to the boat. Keith Moffitt and Darrell McKinley had some great fishing at the Corbet with 16 fish between them to the boat. Connor Branniff and Niall McGreevy also had a few nice fish to the boat. Raymond Cherry and Wesley Beattie had 6 fish between them to the boat. Patrick Reynolds and Patrick Duffy, visiting anglers from Denone, Co. Meath enjoyed a good day’s fishing at the Corbet and they had a few nice fish. Seamus Lenaghan and Ryan Mitchell were out in the Corbet’s wheelyboat and they also had a few good fish. Geoff Hylands, Leonard Ervine, Brian McMullan, Davy McCandless, Roger McClements and others have also been reporting some great shore fishing at the Corbet over the past few weeks. On Saturday 14 May Lisburn anglers Aidan Lavery and Eddie Harris enjoyed a great morning’s boat fishing at the Corbet. Andrew Rea and Andrew Rowan were also out boat fishing and they also had great sport with 50 fish up to 4.5lbs between them. The Club’s competition anglers were also fishing at the Corbet. In the adult category Henry McKnight won the Jim Ledlie Cup with a great brace of fish weighing 6lbs 8ozs. Henry’s best fish was a cracking fish weighing just over 5lbs. Roger McClements and Trevor Jones were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Xavier Mackle won the junior competition for the Percy Trophy with a good brace of fish weighing just under 4lbs. Elijah Parks and Alfie McDowell were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Alfie caught a great fish weighing just over 3lbs. The Adult, Juvenile and Junior Prize Distribution Evening will be held at the Clubrooms, Havelock Park, Banbridge on Thursday 26 May starting at 7pm. The Club’s next competitions are for the Patsy McGivern Shield (Adults) and the Patsy McGivern Trophy (Juveniles) at the Corbet Lough on Friday 27 May. On Monday 16 May Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields enjoyed a great boat session with over 20 fish between them. Wilson Clinghan also had great sport with over 20 fish. Frank Kearney had 10 fish including a real beauty of 4lbs. Raymond Cherry and Wesley Beattie had over 20 fish between them. Geoff Hylands and Leonard Ervine also had over 20 fish between them. On Thursday 19 May there was a great turn out of both boat and shore anglers at the Corbet. Matt Shields and Lance McCarthy were out for a morning’s boat fishing and they had 12 fish between them. Stevie Rea and Darrell McKinley were also out boat fishing and they had 50 fish between them. Stevie and Darrell always fish catch and release with barbless hooks. Les Patton had 7 fish including a great brownie of 4lbs and a cracking Rainbow of 5lbs. Gary McFadden and Davy McGuinness were out boat fishing in the afternoon and evening and they had 40 fish between them on cormorants. Davy caught a absolutely cracking Rainbow which they estimated at 12lbs before sportingly returning the fish. Indeed Gary also hooked and lost a fish which he reckoned was also in double figures. Geoff Hylands and Leonard Ervine were out for some evening fishing and they had over 30 fish to the boat between them. Sam Grant and Roger McClements had 30 fish to the boat between them. Darryl Alexander and Dessie Graham also had a great boat session with 18 fish between them. On Friday 20 May the Black Pennells held a 5 Nations team qualifier at the Corbet Lough. They had a great day’s fishing with 14 anglers reporting a return of 126 fish. Local angler Stevie Rea was the top rod on the day with 20 fish. On Saturday 21 May Gary McFadden and Davy McGuinness were boat fishing at the Corbet and they had over 45 fish between them using a washing line set up with small cormorants and an octopus. Gary caught a beautiful Rainbow of about 6lbs. Dennis Lucas and Gary Moore also had a great boat session with 21 fish between them. On Sunday 22 May John Lewis and Michael McKeown had 10 fish to the boat. Philip Rankin also caught 10 fish. Visiting anglers Patrick Duffy, Denone, Co Meath and Pat Reynolds had 5 nice Rainbows including a good fish of about 3lbs. Ryan Mitchell and Seamus Lenaghan were out in the wheelyboat and they had 5 Rainbows up to 6lbs between them. Raymond Cherry and Jonathan Caughey had 10 good fish between them to the boat. Dean McStraw had 15 Rainbows up to 4lbs to the boat. Stevie Ferris was fishing from the shore and he had a few nice fish up to 5lbs on the fly. On Friday 27 May the Club’s competition anglers were fishing an evening competition at the Corbet for the Patsy McGivern Shield. There was a very good turn out of anglers and they enjoyed some great sport in the evening rise. A number of anglers weighed in fish of 4lbs and better. Kevin Conwell won the competition with a great brace of Rainbows weighing 6lbs 8ozs. Colin Crothers and Brendan Downey were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Club’s next competition is the Club outing to Lough Lene, Co Westmeath on Saturday 4 June to fish for the Straghan Cup and the Coburn Cup.
