Fishing Report – June 2022

BAC – Davy McGuinness with 12lb Rainbow caught at the Corbet Lough on 19 May 2022.

The Corbet Lough continues to fish very well with both boat and shore anglers continuing to report some great catches. On Thursday 2 June Joe and Patrick Curran were out for a few hours boat fishing and they had 30 fish between them. On Saturday 4 June Tom King and Gerard Lyness enjoyed some great boat fishing at the Corbet Lough. They caught 40 fish including 5 of the Corbet’s beautiful Brownies. Gary McFadden and Davy McGuinness were also out boat fishing and they had 35 fish between them. Davy caught another great Rainbow of about 6lbs 8ozs. Aidan Lavery was also out for a boat session and he had 15 fish. Disabled anglers Seamus Lenaghan and Ryan Mitchell were out in the wheelyboat and they had a few nice Rainbows and Brownies. On Saturday 4 June the Club’s competition anglers were at Lough Lene, Co Westmeath to fish for the Straghan Cup. They reported some great sport. At the weigh-in Eugene Curran won the Cup with a great brace of fish weighing 6lbs 12ozs. Joe Curran was 2nd and Freddy Steele was 3rd. The Club’s next competition is on the River Bann on Friday 10 June when the anglers will be fishing for the Otterburn Brown Trout Trophy. On Sunday 5 June Darrell McKinley and Andrew Chambers were on the Corbet for a boat session and they had 20 fish. Geoff Hylands and Leonard Ervine were out also for a boat session and they had 21 fish between them. John Lewis and Michael McKeown had 10 fish to the boat. Philip Rankin had 5 fish to the boat. Hayley Dobbins and Maurice Blakley had 5 fish to the boat. On Monday 6 June Frank Kearney and visiting angler Anthony Donnelly from Co Louth had a great boat session on the Corbet with 28 fish up to 3lbs between them. In the evening there was a great rise on the Lough at about 9:30pm. Darrell McKinley had 40 fish to the boat. Sam Watt and Andy Holden had 35 fish between them to the boat. Aidan Lavery and Raymond Cherry also had 35 fish between them to the boat. Eugene Curran had 30 fish to the boat. Geoff Hylands and Leonard Ervine had 18 fish to the boat. Brian McMullan had 5 good fish to the boat. On Thursday 9 June Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields were out for a boat session during the day and they had 5 fish to the boat. In the evening Eugene Curran and Ritchie Jamison had 30 fish between them to the boat. Noel Burns and Derek Burns were also out for a boat session and they had 20 fish between them. On Friday 10 June Sam Watt was on the Corbet for a couple of hours for the evening rise and he had 18 fish to the boat. The Club’s competition anglers were on the River Bann for an evening competition to fish for the Otterburn Brown Trout Trophy. Wilson ‘Skippy’ Clinghan won the Trophy with Keith Gibson and Geoff Hylands 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Club’s next competition is at the Corbet Lough on Friday 17 June when the adults will fish for the Boat Anglers Cup and the juveniles will fish for the Wardsworth Bethel Cup. On Saturday 11 June the conditions at the Corbet were very blustery during the day and only a few anglers ventured out. Gary McFadden and Davy McGuinness had a great boat session with 20 fish up to 6lbs between them. After the boat session Davy went down the shore for a bit more fly fishing and he caught a great Rainbow and Brownie both around the 3lbs mark. On Monday 13 June Darryl Alexander was out on the Corbet for some boat fishing and he caught a absolutely beautiful Brown Trout. It was a golden colour with beautiful spots and a big full tail. The Corbet is also fishing well in the evening with a great hatch of sedges and buzzers. On Thursday 16 June Gerard Lyness was out on the Corbet for an afternoon’s boat fishing and he had over 30 fish to the boat. Dean McStraw and Mark Ferguson had 10 fish to the boat between them. George Vennard was fly fishing from the shore and he also had great sport catching 5 fish including a great Brown Trout of about 4lbs. On Friday 17 June the Club’s competition anglers were at the Corbet Lough for an evening C&R boat competition for the Boat Anglers Cup. The 18 anglers had over 100 fish between them. Geoff Hylands won the Cup with 12 fish. Colin Crothers was 2nd also with 12 fish and Sam Watt was 3rd with 10 fish. The Club’s next competition is on Friday 24 June on the River Bann when the anglers will fish for the Dessie Smyth Cup. On Saturday 18 June the Silver Butchers held an outing on the Corbet Lough. All the anglers enjoyed great fishing. The top rod on the day was Gerard Lyness, a Corbet regular, with 32 fish. Gerard is having some great boat fishing sessions on the Corbet this season. Gary Chivers was 2nd with 19 fish. On Sunday 19 June Sam Watt anbd Keith Moffitt were out for a morning boat fishing on the Corbet and in challenging conditions they had 7 fish. Darryl Grimason and Andy Holden were also out for a few hours boat fishing and they had 5 fisdh. Alan Dickson also had 5 fish to the boat. Philip Rankin and Michael McKeown also had 5 fish to the boat. Patrick Curran was out in the afternoon and he had 3 fish to the boat. On Monday 20 June Frank Kearney took a few hours boat fishing at the Corbet and he caught 12 fish, including a great Brown Trout around the 6lbs mark. Anthony Donnelly and Eugene McEneaney, visiting anglers fromn Co Louth had 11 Rainbows and a Brown of about 3.5lbs to the boat. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields had 12 fish to the boat. Robert Weir had 5 fish to the boat. Sam Grant also had 5 fish to the boat. On Thursday 23 June there were a number of boats out on the Corbet throughout the day as anglers took the opportunity for some late practise ptior to the Corbet Lough Open Boat Fly Fishing Competition on 25 June. Eugene Curran and Wilson Clinghan had a great practise session with 42 fish between them to the boat. Joe and Patrick Curran also had a great session with 18 fish in a few hours. Stevie Rea and Mark Douglas had 30 fish between them to the boat. Gerard Lyness and Tom King had 25 fish between them to the boat. Geoff Hylands was out for a few hours in the afternoon and he had 5 fish. On Friday 24 June Roger Armstrong was out for a boat session and he caught 8 nice Rainbows. Throughout the past week anglers have continued to enjoy some great dry fly fishing in the evening at the Corbet. On Saturday 25 June 30 anglers fished in the Corbet Lough Open Boat Fly Fishing Competition 2022. (See seperate report on this website ‘Corbet Lough Open Boat Fly Fishing Competition 2022’.) Although the conditions were challenging the anglers enjoyed some great sport with 193 fish caught and released. At the final count the judges declared Wilson ‘Skippy’ Clinghan top rod with 18 fish. Patrick Curran was a very close 2nd on 17 fish with Stevie Rea in 3rd place on 16 fish. The next Club competitions are at the Corbet Lough on 2 July. The adult anglers will be fishing for the Pyers Cup, the juveniles will be fishing for the Martin Dynes Cup and the juniors will be fishing for the Dr Cocks Shield. In the evening Seamus Lenaghan and Ryan Mitchell took a few hours boat fishing and they had a couple of good Rainbows. On Sunday 26 June Stevie Clarke took a few hours boat fishing and he caught 14 fish.
