BAC – Corbet Lough Open Boat Fly Fishing Competition 25 June 2022. Boats ready for the anglers

On Saturday 2 July Eddie Harris and his boat partner were out for a morning’s boat fishing on Corbet Lough and they had 16 fish between them. In the afternoon the Club’s junior anglers fished for the Dr Cocks Shield. All the junior anglers had fish at the weigh-in. The result was as follows: Elijah Parks 1st, Jayden Smyth 2nd and Pearse Downey 3rd. The next Junior Competition is at the Corbet Lough on Saturday 13 August for the Martin Dynes Trophy. In the evening the Club’s adult anglers fished for the Pyers Cup. Anglers caught a few fish at the start of the evening and then the fish went off until the late rise came on at about 10:00pm. A good few anglers had one fish but just couldn’t catch that good second fish for the weigh-in. At the weigh-in Colin Crothers won the Pyers Cup with two good fish. Kevin Conwell and Noel Burns were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The next adult and juvenile competition is on Saturday 16 July at the Corbet Lough. The adults will fish for the Woods / McClory Cup and the juveniles will fish for the Barlow Shield. On Sunday 3 July Leonard Ervine and Geoff Hylands took a boat session for a few hours in the evening and they had 14 fish between them. On Tuesday 5 July a number of anglers were out on the shore for the evening rise. Unfortunately the rise was not as good as the anglers’ hoped. However Sam Marks still took a few nice fish on the fly. Colin Crothers and Noel Burns also took a few fish and Colin caught an absolutely cracking Rainbow of 7lbs. On Thursday 7 July the Corbet was very busy in the evening with boat anglers, shore fly fishers and bait anglers. The bait anglers all seemed to catch their bag limit. However it was more of a challenge for the fly anglers. David McCreedy and Roger Armstrong were out in a boat and they fished deep to catch 5 fish between them. Geoff Hylands and Leonard Ervine were also out for a boat session and they caught a few fish on lures. Davy McCandless was on his favourite fishing stand and he caught 3 nice fish on the fly. Brian McMullan was also fly fishing from the shore and he caught a couple of nice fish. On Saturday 16 July the Club’s competition anglers were at the Corbet Lough to fish for the Woods / McClory Cup. At the weigh-in Trevor Jones won the Cup with a nice bag of fish weighing just under 4lbs. Kevin Conwell and Paul McKinstry were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Club’s next competitions are on Saturday 30 July at the beautiful setting of Spelga Dam in the Mourne Mountains. The adult anglers will fish for the Linda Clinghan Shield and the juveniles will fish for the Wilson Clinghan Cup. As we are now just past the half way point of the season the adult Angler of the Year 2022 table is very tight and very interesting. Just 4 points seperates the top 9 anglers. Last season’s angler of the year Roger McClements is joint 1st along with Trevor Jones, a former Angler of Year winner and a very experienced competition angler and Kevin Conwell. Kevin is relatively new to the Club’s competition scene but he is making great progress this season. In joint 2nd place, just a point behind the leaders, is Geoff Hylands, a former Fly Fishing World Cup winner and Colin Crothers, another former Angler of the Year winner and a very experienced competition angler. The recent spell of warmer weather has made the fishing at the Corbet more challenging. However anglers who venture out and adopt to the conditions are still catching. On Thursday 21 July Philip Rankin was out for a morning’s boat fishing session and he caught 6 fish. Brendan Downey was also out for a boat fishing session and he had 3 nice fish by fishing deep. All the fish were in great condition. On Thursday 28 July Philip Rankin was out for a morning’s boat fishing on Corbet Lough and he had 6 nice fish. Roy Blake was also out for a boat session and he also had a number of nice fish. Brendan Downey had 6 fish to the boat in the late morning on both dries and pulled wets. In the afternoon Sam Grant was out for a boat session and there was a great rise on the Lough. Sam took 7 good fish on small dries. On Friday 29 July Joe McCandless and Leonard Ervine were out for a boat session on the Corbet and they had 5 fish between them. On Saturday 30 July the Club’s competition anglers were at Spelga Dam in the Mournes to fish for the Linda Clinghan Shield. There was a good turn out of anglers. Although the conditions were very good the fishing was challenging with very few fish rising. There were just 6 fish put forward for the weigh-in but they were great fish. Noel Burns won the Linda Clinghan Shield with a cracking brownie of just under 2lbs. Roger McClements was 2nd with a nice brace of brownies. Brendan Downey was 3rd with a beautiful brownie of 13 inches and just under 1lb weight. Trevor Jones caught a large pike on the fly. Trevor said that the pike was in great condition and he reckoned that it was about 7lbs. The Club’s next competition is at the Corbet Lough on 13 August. The adult anglers will be fishing for the Jordan Cup and the juveniles will be fishing for the Corbet Cup. On Saturday 30 July Stevie Rea and Andrew Rea enjoyed some good boat fishing at the Corbet Lough. They caught 13 fish between them. On Sunday 31 July Frank Kearney had a good boat session at the Corbet Lough. He caught 5 nice rainbows. Visiting anglers Anthony Donnelly and Mark Gallagher had 4 rainbows between them to the boat. Philip Rankin had a rainbow and 2 brownies to the boat.
