BAC – Darryl Alexander with a beautiful Brown Trout caught at the Corbet Lough on 13 June 2022

On Monday 1 August Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields enjoyed a few hours boat fishing at the Corbet Lough. They caught a couple of nice rainbows. On Tuesday 2 August the conditions at the Corbet were challenging with a strong gusty south/south westerly wind on the Lough. There was a decent evening rise on the Lough and Brendan Downey took some good fish from the shore or dry daddies and sedges. On Thursday 4 August there was a few boats out on the Corbet. Stevie Rea and Keith Moffitt had 12 fish between them to the boat. David McCreedy and Roger Armstrong also had some good fishing with 8 fish between them to the boat. Gerard Lyness and Tom King had 6 fish between them. Sam Grant had 12 fish to the boat on small dries. Eugene Curran was also fishing dries and he had 6 fish to the boat. On Friday 5 August there was only a couple of boats out on the Lough and there was very few fish showing. Brendan Downey had a couple of nice browns to the boat. Ryan Mitchell was also out in a boat and he also caught a nice brown. The weather during the past week has been hot, indeed very hot on occasions, leaving the fishing on both the river and the Corbet Lough very challenging. On Thursday 11 August Stevie Rea ventured out for a few hours boat fishing at the Corbet Lough and he had 10 fish to the boat. In the evening anglers are catching a few fish on dries just at dark. However this is a short window and every evening is different. Geoff Hylands, George Gallagher, Leonard Ervine, Eamon Rodgers, Wilson Clinghan and Davy McCandless have all had some good fishing in the evening rise during the past week. The bait anglers are also catching their bag limits in the evening. Anglers should note that Inland Fisheries Ireland has recommended that anglers cease fishing catch and release during this warm spell to avoid causing the fish undue stress and fatalities. Although there are no restrictions at the Corbet Lough or on the River Bann anglers should fish responsibly at this time. On Saturday 13 August the Club’s adult competition anglers fished at the Corbet Lough for the Jordan Cup. The conditions were very challenging with bright sunshine and extreme heat. A nice ripple was the only bit of consolation. At the weigh-in Wilson ‘Skippy’ Clinghan won the Jordan Cup with a great catch of 5lbs 4ozs. Roger McClements was 2nd. The Club’s next competitions are on Saturday 27 August and they will also be at the Corbet Lough. The adults will be fishing for the Shooter Cup and the juveniles will be fishing for the Joe Curran Cup. On Thursday 18 August the weather was a bit cooler and there was reasonable cloud cover which was better for the fly fisher. There was a good number of boats out on the Corbet Lough throughout the day and the anglers enjoyed some good fishing. Stevie Rea had 11 fish to the boat. Philip Rankin was out during the morning and he had 7 fish to the boat. Lance McCarthy had 5 fish to the boat. Brendan Downey had 7 nice fish up to 3lbs to the boat. Dessy and Glenn Graham were also out for a boat session and they had 4 fish between them. Sam Grant and Wilson Clinghan were also out for a boat session and they were catching fairly regularly. The shore anglers are also catching well on the fly in the late evening. George Gallagher, Davy McCandless and Brian McMullan are catching some nice fish in the top bay. Donald McClearn, Leonard Ervine and Geoff Hylands fished dries up to dark at Bruce’s Point and they had 14 fish between them. On Saturday 20 August the Silver Butchers held a boat fishing outing at the Corbet Lough. They had some great fishing. They caught and released 54 fish between them. Wesley Beattie was the top rod on this occasion with 13 fish. The top boat reported 24 fish between them. Stevie and Andrew Rea were also out for a boat fishing session and they had 22 fish between them. The anglers reported that they were catching on dries and just under the surface. On Sunday 21 August Sam Watt and Andy Holden were boat fishing at the Corbet Lough and they had 18 fish up to 4lbs 8ozs between them. On Wednesday 24 August Imogen Johnston was fishing dries from the shore and she had a nice Brownie and 3 nice Rainbows up to dark. Roger McClements was also fishing dries from the shore and he had 6 fish. On Thursday 25 August Stevie Rea and Marty Allen were out on the Corbet and they had 15 fish to the boat between them. Brendan Downey was also out for a boat session and he had 7 good fish. On Saturday 27 August Andrew Rea was out for a boat session and he caught 5 nice fish by fishing deep. On the same day the Club’s competition anglers fished at the Corbet Lough for the Shooter Cup. Kevin Conwell won the Shooter Cup with a nice bag of fish weighing 3lbs 8ozs. Wilson Clinghan and Sam Grant were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The Club’s next competition is at the Corbet Lough on Saturday 3 September when the junior anglers will be fishing for the Corbet Junior Cup. Then on Saturday 10 September the adults and juvenile anglers will be at the Corbet Lough to fish for the Gowdy Cup and the Super Fry Cup respectively. On Monday 29 August there was another very good rise on the Corbet just at dark. Geoff Hylands, Leonard Ervine, Sam Grant and Tom Cherry were all out boat fishing and although they were off the lake just before the big rise came on they still took some nice fish. Brendan Downey, George Vennard, Eamon Rodgers and Dale Rodgers were fishing from the shore and they caught some great fish at dark on dries.
