
On Monday 2 June there was a fresh southerly breeze blowing down the Corbet Lough. Most of the anglers fishing from the shore stuck along the Dam Wall, the fishing stands and in the first field on the Castlewellan Road shore where there was a bit of shelter. Brendan Downey had 6 nice fish on the fly, taking a couple of the Dam Wall and the others from a bit of a sheltered shore just beyond Bruce’s Point. The Corbet Lough is fishing really well from both the shore and the boats. Leonard Ervine, Geoff Hylands, Davy McCandless, Paul McKinstry and George Gallagher have been catching some great fish in the evening in the top bay. On Thursday 5 June Stevie Rea had a great boat session catching more than 15 fish. On Saturday 7 June the boats were busy and all the anglers caught fish. The pick of the catches were Stevie Ferris and Jim McClelland with 16 fish to the boat, Eddie Harris and Aidan Lavery had 10 fish between them and Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields had 9 fish between them to the boat. The Club’s competition anglers were at the Corbet Lough in the evening to fish for the Patsy McGivern Shield. There were some great fish and great bags of fish at the weigh-in. The top rod and the winner of the Patsy McGivern Shield was Raymond Cherry with a lovely brace of Rainbows weighing 6lbs 10ozs. Brendan Downey and Lenny Murray were 2nd and 3rd respectively. On Tuesday 10 June there was a good turnout of anglers at the Corbet Lough to fish the evening rise. Robert Weir, Leonard Ervine, Davy McCandless, George Gallagher, Paul McKinstry and Geoff Hylands all caught some nice fish in the top bay. Leonard caught a lovely fish of over 3lbs. Brendan Downey, Nigel Erskine, Kevin Barry and Cyril McAllister all caught fish on Bruce’s Point. Brendan Downey had a good fish of about 4lbs. Eugene Curran had 3 fish on the Castlewellan side of the Lough. On Friday 13 June Patrick Curran had a great evening’s boat fishing at the Corbet Lough. He caught over 10 fish, both Browns and Rainbows, on dry flies with the best fish weighing about 5lbs. On Saturday 14 June the Club’s competition anglers travelled to Lough Melvin to fish for the Linda Clinghan Shield. This was a C&R competition. At the close of the competition Dessy Graham won the Shield with 4 fish. Eugene Curran was 2nd with 3 fish and Freddy Steele was 3rd with 2 fish. Although Geoff Hylands wasn’t placed in the competition he recorded the best fish measuring 42cm which is a great fish for Lough Melvin. On Thursday 19 June the Black Pennels held an outing at the Corbet Lough. The top rod on the day had 13 fish to the boat and all the anglers reported catching fish. Stevie Rea and Roger Armstrong were also out boat fishing and they had 12 fish between them. On Friday 20 June Stevie Rea was back at the Corbet Lough for a boat fishing session and he had 20 fish to the boat with the best weighing about 6lbs. Gerard Lyness and Malachy Cumberton were also out and they also had about 20 fish to the boat with the best also weighing up to about 6lbs. On Friday evening the Club’s competition anglers fished the first heat in the Boat Anglers Cup at the Corbet Lough. The top rods in the first heat were Roger McClements with 7 fish, Colin Crothers with 3 fish and Lenny Murray with 1 fish. On Saturday 21 June the Club’s competition anglers were back at the Corbet Lough to fish in the second heat of the Boat Anglers Cup. The top rods in the second heat were Geoff Hylands with 13 fish, Andy Holden with 8 fish and Raymond Cherry with 5 fish. All the qualifying anglers will now fish in the final of the Boat Anglers Cup at the Corbet Lough on 4 July. On Thursday 26 June the Corbet was busy with most of the boats out during the day. Stevie Rea and his partner Mark Douglas had a great session with over 20 fish to the boat between them. Gerard Lyness and Tom King also had a good boat session with over 10 fish between them. Brendan Downey also had 10 fish to the boat. Leonard Ervine and Geoff Hylands were out for an evening’s boat session and they had over 20 fish between them. On Friday 27 June Stevie Rea and Louis Clarke were out boat fishing on the Corbet and they had 11 fish between them. On Saturday 28 June the Club’s competition anglers were fishing an evening competition at the Corbet Lough for the Brendan Downey Cup. There was a good turnout of anglers. At the weigh-in Geoff Hylands won the Cup with a fantastic brace of fish weighing 7lbs 4ozs. Sam Grant and Leonard Ervine were 2nd and 3rd respectively.
