BAC – Tom King, The Silver Butchers gets tackled up at the Corbet Lough on Saturday 9 October 2021

The month of October has started with a real autumnal feel in the air and the fishing is gradually improving again. On Monday 3 October Brendan Downey was fly fishing from the shore and he had 4 nice fish. In the evening Leonard Ervine and Geoff Hylands were also fishing from the shore and they had a brace each on the fly. Dennis Hamilton and Jim Mitchell were bait fishing and they took their fish very quickly. On Saturday 8 October the Corbet was very busy. The Silver Butchers held their end of season boat fishing outing on the Lough and the Club’s competition anglers were on the shore fishing for the Hanlon Cup. The Butchers reported some great catches to the boats. The top 3 rods on the day were Jim McCelland, Peter Reid and Billy Johnson with three beauties of 4lbs 3ozs, 4lbs 2ozs and 3lbs 9ozs respectively. On the shore there were also some very good catches although there were no really big fish. Paul McKinstry, the in-form angler, won the Hanlon Cup and his second consecutive competition with a good brace of Rainbows weighing 4lbs 8ozs. Darryl Alexander and Sam Grant were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The final competitions in the 2022 season are back at the Corbet Lough on Saturday 22 October. The adults will be fishing for the Hugh Savage Cup and the juveniles will be fishing for the Sportsman Cup. The race of the adult Angler of the Year 2022 is very tight with only a few points seperating the top 4 or 5 anglers. There is definitely everything to fish for in the final competition. On Thursday 13 October Roy Blake had a good boat session with 2 Rainbows up to 3lbs and a beautiful Brownie of 4lbs. On Friday 14 October Aidan Lavery and Jim McClelland had a good boat session with a brace apiece up to 3lbs. On Thursday 20 October the Corbet was busy with a number of boat anglers getting in some boat fishing before the end of the season. Gerard Lyness and Tom King enjoyed some great fishing with 20 fish up to 3lbs between them to the boat. Sam Grant had 7 good fish to the boat. Brian Quirey had 5 Rainbows to the boat. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields had 5 fish between them to the boat. Philip Rankin had 4 fish to the boat. Brendan Downey was fly fishing from the shore and he had 7 nice Rainbows. On Friday 21 October Stevie Rea had a boat fishing session and he caught had 5 good Rainbows. On Saturday 22 October the Corbet was busy with boat anglers and the Club’s final competition of the 2022 season. Best of the boats was Gary Chivers and Jim McClellend with 6 fish; Dessie Copeland and Conor Kelly with 6 fish and Aidan Lavery and Eddie Harris with 5 fish. The anglers fishing in the Club’s competition also enjoyed some great sport with a few very good fish of 4lbs plus at the weigh-in. The winner of the Hugh Savage Cup was Roger McClements with a great brace of fish weiging 6lbs 3ozs. Sam Grant was a very close 2nd with his 2 fish weighing 6lbs. Colin Crothers was in 3rd place with a nice brace of fish weighing 5lbs 8ozs. After the recent floods down the River Bann there are reports of a number of salmon and dollaghan being caught on the Club’s stretch of the River. Eugene Curran had a great salmon of 12lbs on the fly and Wilson Clinghan had 4 very good fish on the spinner. In other news the Club is delighted to announce that it will be hosting a number of fortnightly fly tying demonstrations in the Clubrooms over the close season. These will commence on Thursday 3 November, 7:15pm – 8:45pm. Please see the seperate report ‘Fly Tying Demonstrations 2022/2023’ on this website. On Monday 24 October Brendan Downey enjoyed some great fly fishing from the shore at the Corbet Lough. He had 7 good fish up to 4lbs on lures and a Peter Ross. On Saturday 29 October Aidan Lavery had a good boat session at the Corbet with 13 fish. On Sunday 30 October Stevie Ferris was fly fishing from the shore and he had 3 nice fish. On the final day the conditions were very gusty which deterred some boat anglers but there were still a good number of shore anglers. Philip and Ellie Carson caught some nice fish on the worm. Sam Grant had a couple of fish, including a cracker of about 4lbs, on the fly. Brendan Downey had 6 nice fish on the fly. Also over the last couple of weeks of the season anglers reported some good sport on the River when the conditions were right. Eugene Curran, Geoff Hylands and Leonard Ervine had salmon and dollaghan up to 10lbs on the fly.
