Fishing Report – April 2024

BAC – Stevie Rea with awesome Rainbow of 9lbs 11ozs caught whilst boat fishing at the Corbet Lough in 2022.

Although the weather was cold with a north easterly wind there was a big turn of anglers at the Corbet Lough on Monday 1 April. The Club’s competition anglers were fishing for the Linda McCandless Cup and many other anglers were out for the opening day of the boat fishing. Most of the boat anglers stayed in the sheltered bottom bay and they all appeared to be catching. Eugene Curran was the Captain of the Day for the Linda McCandless Cup competition. At the weigh-in there was some great bags of fish and indeed some big individual fish. Daryl Alexander won the Linda McCandless Cup with a fantastic brace of fish weighing 7lbs 4ozs. Daryl also caught the best fish of the day at 4lbs 13ozs. Geoff Hylands was 2nd with a great brace of fish weighing 6lbs 10ozs and Derek Burns was 3rd with a couple of lovely fish weighing 5lbs 9ozs. On Friday 5 April Sam Watt was out for a boat session at the Corbet Lough and he caught 14 fish on buzzers. Geoff Hylands was fishing the shore and he caught 12 fish on lures. Martin Bush, Leonard Ervine and Donald McClearn were also fly fishing from the shore and they had a number of fish up to about 4.5lbs. On Sunday 7 April Kevin Conwell was fly fishing from the shore at the Corbet Lough and he had 16 fish to the net. On Monday 8 April Aidan Lavery and Jim McClelland were boat fishing at the Corbet Lough and they caught 20 fish between them pulling wets. Stevie Ferris was fishing the shore and he had some good fish on lures. On Thursday 11 April Matt Shields and Lance McCarthy were out on the Corbet for a morning boat session and they had 12 fish between them in a couple of hours. On Saturday 13 April there was a good turn out of the Club’s competition anglers at the Corbet Lough to fish for the Dominic Downey Cup. There was a brisk westerly/south westerly breeze on the Corbet which made the fishing challenging. However at the weigh-in there was still some fantastic fish and bags of fish. The experienced Roger McClements won the Cup with a fantastic brace of fish weighing 9lbs 4ozs. Roger also caught the best fish of the day, an awesome Rainbow weighing 6lbs 4ozs. Keith Brown was 2nd with a brace of fish weighing 6lbs 8ozs and Keith Gibson was 3rd with a brace of fish weighing 6lbs 1ozs. David and James McCreedy were out for a boat fishing session. They fished deep and they both caught 4 fish. On Sunday 21 April the Corbet Lough fished well throughout the day. Sam Watt was out for a morning’s boat fishing and he caught 18 fish. On Monday 22 April the Lough again fished very well from both the boat and the shore. Brian McConville and a number of other anglers reported some great fish from the shore. The fish were high up in the water and anglers were catching on Diawl Bachs, hoppers and cormorants. Lance McCarthy, Matt Shields, Frank Kearney, Geoff Hylands and Leonard Ervine were all out boat fishing and they all appeared to be catching regularly. On Wednesday evening 24 April Leonard Ervine was fly fishing from the shore at the Corbet and he caught a great Rainbow of 5lbs 13ozs which he sportingly returned. On Thursday 25 April Robert Weir and his boat partner Dave had a great day’s boat fishing at the Corbet. They caught 25 fish between them with the best fish weighing about 5lbs. On Saturday 27 April there was a great turn out of the Club’s competition anglers at Lough Lene, Co Westmeath to fish for the AIB Cup. They had a brilliant day’s fishing catching 116 fish between them. At the weigh-in Geoff Hylands won then AIB Cup with a catch of 6lbs 12ozs. Conor Kelly was 2nd with a catch of 6lbs 3ozs and Eugene Curran was 3rd with a catch of 6lbs 1ozs.
