Fishing Report – April 2023

BAC – Geoff Hylands with a cracking Rainbow of 5lbs 4ozs which he caught on the fly at the Corbet Lough on Tuesday 21 March 2023

On Saturday 1 April the boat fishing opened at the Corbet Lough. There was a great turn out of both shore and boat anglers. Eddie Harris, Aidan Lavery and Raymond Cherry were out boat fishing in the morning and they all enjoyed good sport. Gerard Lyness and Tom King were also out boat fishing and they had 16 fish up to 3lbs between them. The Club’s competition anglers were shore fishing at the Corbet for the Bruce Carson Trophy. Although the competition anglers caught lots of fish unfortunately there were no big ones at the weigh-in on this occasion. Dessy Graham won the Bruce Carson Trophy with a nice brace of Rainbows weighing just under 5lbs. Sam Grant and Paul McKinstry were 2nd and 3rd respectively. On Sunday 2 April Andy Holden and Sam Watt enjoyed some great boat fishing at the Corbet Lough with 24 fish between them. Leonard Ervine and Geoff Hylands were also out boat fishing and they had 21 fish between them. George Gallagher was fly fishing in the top bay and he caught and returned 18 fish. On Wednesday 5 April Eugene Curran was fly fishing catch and release from the shore and he had 19 fish, 16 Rainbows and 3 Browns. His best fish was a cracking Brown Trout which was 25 inches long and weighed 6.5lbs. On Thursday 6 April there was a good turn out of boat and shore anglers at the Corbet. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields were out in a boat and they were catching regularly. Darrell McKinley was also boat fishing and he was also catching regularly. Tom King and Gerard Lyness were also out in a boat and they had 21 fish up to about 3lbs between them. Patrick Curran was out for a couple of hours fly fishing from the shore and he had 6 fish including a beautiful Brown Trout of about 4lbs. Brendan Downey was also on the shore and he had 7 fish on the fly. On Friday 7 April Claire Henderson and her dad Simon were out for a few hours boat fishing and Claire caught her first Corbet trout on the fly. On Saturday 8 April Adrian Round was on the River Bann and he had great fly fishing catching and releasing 16 beautiful wild browns on both dries and wets. Dan McBurney was at the Corbet and he caught a great brown and also a big eel. The Club’s competition anglers were at Lough Lene, Co Westmeath fishing for the AIB Cup. The fishing was challenging in a cold easterly wind. Eric Graham won the Cup with a nice fish weighing 2lbs 8ozs. On Monday 10 April the Club’s competition anglers fished the River Bann for the Linda McCandless Cup. Dessy Graham had his 2 keepers bag limit by 11:30am. At the weigh-in Wilson Clinghan won the Linda McCandless Cup with Keith Gibson 2nd and Dessy Graham 3rd. At the Corbet Lough there was a good turn out of boat and shore anglers. The fish were going better in the morning and Stevie Ferris, who was fly fishing from the shore, was regularly into fish. Brendan Downey was on the shore and he had 4 fish on the fly. Donald McClearn was also on the shore and catching some good fish on the fly. In the afternoon the weather turned bitterly cold and the fish went off. Roger McClements enjoyed some great fly fishing on the River Bann on Tuesday 11 April and Friday 14 April. He caught and released a number of beautiful wild brownies up 1.25lbs. On Tuesday 11 April David Hayes caught and retuned a great Brown Trout of 4lbs at the Corbet Lough. There was also a further scheduled stocking of Brown Trout fingerlings and larger Rainbows at the Corbet Lough during the week. On Thursday 20 April the boat anglers at the Corbet enjoyed some great sport. Stevie Rea and Mark Douglas had 30 fish to the boat. Tom King and Gerard Lyness had 18 good fish. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields had 12 fish between them to the boat. Roy Blake had 10 nice fish. On Saturday 22 April the weather changed to a cold and windy day. However there was still a good turn out of the Club’s competition anglers at the Corbet Lough. The Club’s Junior anglers were fishing for the Bill Gault Glazing Cup. Pearse Downey won the Cup with a great brace of Rainbows weighing 5lbs 6ozs. Xavier Mackle was 2nd. In the adult competition there were some great bags of fish weighed in. Kevin Conwell won the Dominic Downey Cup with a brace of Rainbows weighing 6lbs 14ozs. Daryl Alexander and Sam Grant were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Roy McKee was out for a bit of boat fishing and he caught a lovely Rainbow of 4lbs. The Boat Attendants advised that the boat anglers reported some great catches on Monday 24 April. On Tuesday 25 April David Perks was fishing the fly from the shore and he caught 4 lovely fish which included 3 Brown Trout. On Wednesday 26 April Davd Hayes was spinning from the shore and he caught a monster Rainbow Trout of 22 inches and weighing 7lbs.On Thursday 27 April Philip Rankin was out for a boat fishing session and he had 24 fish. On Saturday 29 April Davy McGuinness had 20 fish to the boat. Aidan Lavery and Eddie Harris also had a great boat session with 20 fish to the boat. Raymond Cherry and Wes Beattie were also out for a boat session and they had 19 fish between them. Sam Grant had a great boat session with over 20 fish up to 4lbs. On Sunday 30 April Brian McConville was out fly fishing from the shore for a few hours and he had some great sport with 4 fish up to 4lbs. During w/c 24 April Leonard Ervine caught fish on the fly most evenings up to 5lbs. George Gallagher also had some great sport taking a number of cracking fish throughout the week on his shipmans buzzers.
