On Bank Holiday Monday 1 May there was a great turn out of pleasure and competition anglers at the Corbet Lough. In the morning Stevie Ferris was fly fishing from the shore and he had some great sport hooking and missing a lot of fish. Donal McCullaugh was also fly fishing from the shore and he caught and released a fantastic Brown Trout of 6lbs (Photograph above). In the afternoon the Club’s competition anglers were fishing for the Jos Willis Cup. Although the conditions were generally good the fish went off the feed and they were hard to catch. However some anglers still managed some cracking bags of fish. Franck Kearney, who is an occasional competition angler, won the Cup with a great brace of fish weighing 6lbs 7ozs. Roger McClements had a great fish of 5lbs but still only managed 2nd place with a brace of fish weighing 6lbs 5ozs. Kevin Conwell picked up another competition point with a nice brace of fish weighing 4lbs 5ozs. Keith Gibson who was also fishing in the competition caught and released a beautiful Brown Trout of at least 5lbs. On Wednesday 3 May there was a good evening rise at the Corbet from about 7:30pm to dusk. Eugene Curran had 6 fish on dries. Geoff Hylands also had 6 fish and Leonard Ervine had a couple of nice fish. On Friday 5 May the boat anglers enjoyed some great fishing. The best reported catches were Stevie Rea with 14 fish and Roy Blake with 12 fish. On Saturday 6 May there was a good number of boat anglers at the Corbet. In the morning Aidan Lavery and Eddie Harris had 24 fish between them fishing wets. Gary McClelland and Wesley Beattie were also out in the morning and they had 8 fish. In the afternoon Sam Grant was out for a few hours and he had 5 fish to the boat. On Sunday 7 May Gerard Lyness and Malachy Cumberton enjoyed great boat fishing at the Corbet with 23 fish between them. Phillip Rankin was also out boat fishing and he had 10 fish. John McKillen and Paul McKillen were out for a few hours and they had 6 fish between them to the boat. The Corbet Lough continues to fish well with anglers reporting some great dry fly fishing. On Wednesday 10 May George Gallagher, Davy McCandless and Paul McKinstry had great sport in the top bay using shipmans buzzers. Davy had a number of double hook ups. On Thursday 11 May Eugene Curran was out for a boat session in the evening and he had 6 fish. Joe and Patrick Curran were also out and they had 6 fish on shipmans between them to the boat. Geoff Hylands and Donald McClearn also had a number of fish to the boat with a balloon caddis accounting for most of their fish. On Saturday 13 May the Club’s competition anglers were at Emy Lough, Co Monaghan to fish for the Straghan Cup. Although the conditions were challenging due to bright sunshine a number of anglers took good fish on dry mayflies. The competition was fished on a ‘catch and release’ basis and 5 anglers recorded 5 fish to the boat with the result being decided on the time of the 1st fish caught. Eugene Curran won the Straghan Cup with Andy Holden 2nd and Wilson Clinghan 3rd. During the past week anglers have enjoyed some great boat fishing and evening dry fly fishing at the Corbet Lough. Anglers were also enjoying some great fishing at the Corbet Lough on 13 May. Corbet Lough regulars Gerard Lynes and Tom King had a great day’s boat fishing with over 40 fish up to 4lbs between them. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields were also out out for a few hours boat fishing and they had 5 Rainbows. On Tuesday 16 May Eugene Curran was shore fishing at the Corbet and he had 6 nice fish on shipmans buzzers. Daryl Alexander was also fly fishing from the shore and he had 6 fish. On Thursday 18 May Mark and Paul Douglas were boat fishing at the Corbet and they had 21 fish up to 6lbs between them. Stevie Rea was also out for a boat session and he had 9 fish. Tom King and Gerard Lyness were also boat fishing and they had 12 fish to over 3lbs. On Friday 19 May Stevie Rea and Darrell McKinley were out for a boat fishing session and they had 28 fish between them. Dennis Lucas and Roy McKee also had a good boat session with 9 fish. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields had 5 fish between them to the boat. On Saturday 20 May Armagh Angling Club hosted Banbridge Angling Club at Lowry’s Lake, Armagh to fish to the Friendship Cup. After some great fishing Banbridge Angling Club just edged the competition and won the Cup with a catch of just over 13lbs. On the Banbridge team Wilson Clinghan was the top rod which included catching a great Rainbow of 5lbs. Paul Mckinstry and Roger McClements also caught some great fish. On the Armagh team Will Smyth was the top rod and along with Frankie Smyth and Paul McKillen caught some fantastic fish up to 4lbs. Banbridge Angling Club thanks Armagh Angling Club and especially Maggie Donnelly for their tremendous hospitality and the great BBQ. Aidan Lavery and Eddie Harris from Lisburn were boat fishing at the Corbet on 20 May and they had 18 fish between them. Anglers at the Corbet also reported some good catches from the boats on Sunday 21 May. The pick of these were Keith Moffitt 12 fish, Michael McKeown 9 fish, Raymond Cherry and Johnny Caughey 6 fish, Dean McStraw 5 fish, Philip Rankin 4 fish, Alan Dickson 4 fish and Stevie Ferris and Martin Bushe also 4 fish. On Friday 26 May anglers at the Corbet reported some good boat fishing. Tom King and Gerard Lyness had over 30 fish. Stevie Rea and Paul Douglas had 25 fish with Stevie catching a lovely Brown Trout of 4lbs. Roy Blake had 7 fish. On Saturday 27 May the Silver Butchers from Lisburn held a boat fishing outing at the Corbet. All the anglers caught fish and the top rod on the day was Corbet regular Gerard Lyness with a catch that included a great Rainbow of just over 5lbs. The Club’s Junior anglers were fishing for the Percy Trophy. They struggled with a hot weather and only Elijah Parks and Xavier Mackle caught Brown Trout which they sportingly returned as stipulated in the Club’s rules. In the evening the Club’s adult competition anglers were also at the Corbet fishing for the Patsy McGivern Shield. They also found the conditions challenging with most anglers weighing in just a single fish. At the weigh-in Dessy Graham won the Shield with a great Rainbow of 3lbs 11ozs. Roger McClements and Joe Curran were 2nd and 3rd respectively. On Monday 29 May The Black Pennels held a Club outing at the Corbet Lough. They were boat fishing ‘catch and release’ and they recorded a tremondous total catch of 227 fish. The top rod on the day was John Brown with 44 fish.
