Fishing Report – August 2023

BAC – Patrick Curran fly fishing on the River Bann in July 2023

On Wednesday 2 August David McKeague was at the Corbet bait fishing in the top bay and he had a couple of good Rainbows. On 3 August there was a good turn out at the Corbet Lough for the reopening of boat angling. There was a stiff north/north westerly wind on the lough which was challenging for the boat anglers. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields were out in the morning and they had 1 fish to the boat. Roy Blake was out during the late morning and early afternoon and he had 5 fish to the boat. Roy reported that 4 of the fish were in good condition and the other had argulus on it. Stevie Rea was out in the morning until mid afternoon and he had 4 fish to the boat. Stevie reported that 3 of his fish were in good condition and that the other fish had some argulus on it. Frank Kearney and his boat partner Robert Derby were also out until mid afternoon and they had 6 fish between them. Gerard Lyness and Tom King had 3 fish between them to the boat. On Friday 4 August the conditions were better. Aidan Lavery and Jim McClelland were out for a boat fishing session on the Corbet and they had 14 fish between them. Stevie Rea and Lance McCarthy were also out and they had 11 fish between them to the boat. Simon Henderson was out for 4 hour boat session he had 2 fish. Les Patton was out a couple of hours and he had 1 fish to the boat. Sam Grant was out in the late afternoon and early evening and he had 5 fish to the boat. Kenny Bird and Richard McMaster had 2 fish to the boat. On Saturday 5 August Aidan Lavery and Eddie Harris were out on the Corbet for a boat session and they caught 2 fish between them. Roger McClements was fly fishing from the shore and he caught 4 fish. On Monday 7 August Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields were out for an early afternoon boat session on the Corbet. Lance and Matt caught 5 fish between them. David McKeague was bait fishing in the top bay and he caught a couple of nice fish. In the evening Seamus Doyle was also bait fishing in the top bay and he also caught 2 nice fish. On Thursday 10 August Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields were out on the Corbet for a boat session and they had 3 fish between them. Roy Blake was also out and he had 3 fish to the boat. In the afternoon Les Patton and his partner were out for a boat session. Les caught a fantastic fish which he weighed at 6lbs, photographed and then sportingly returned. On Saturday 12 August the Club’s competition anglers were at the Corbet to fish for the Jordan Cup. The conditions were challenging with a blustery wind and some thundery showers. In addition although there was some sedges being blown onto the Lough there was no evening rise of note. At the weigh-in Sam Grant won the Jordan Cup with Colin Crothers and Noel Burns 2nd and 3rd respectively. On Monday 14 August Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields were on the Corbet for a boat session and they had 4 fish between them. Terry Gault and Jeff Twinen also had 4 fish between them to the boat. Kenny Bird was also out and he had a couple of fish. On Thursday 17 August Philip Rankin was boat fishing on the Corbet during the morning and he caught 6 fish. Roy Blake was also out during the morning and he had 5 fish. Simon Henderson was out for a few hours and he caught 1 fish. Tom King and Gerard Lyness were out in the afternoon and they caught 12 fish between them. Brendan Downey was out of the late afternoon and evening and he had 5 fish to the boat. Sam Grant was out in the evening and he also had 5 fish to the boat. Stevie Rea and Darrell McKinley were also out in the evening and they caught 8 fish between them. On Saturday 19 August the Silver Butchers held a club outing on the Corbet Lough. The early reports were that Tom King and Eddie Harris had 8 fish between them to the boat at lunch time. At the end of the day the Silver Butchers had a catch of 69 fish. The top rods were as follows:- Martin Ferguson 8, Eddie Harris 7, Gerard Lyness 7, Peter Reid 7, Aidan Lavery 6, William Johnston 6, Wesley Beattie 6 and Tom King 6. On Sunday 20 August Kenny Bird was out for a couple of hours boat fishing on the Corbet and he caught 4 fish. On Wednesday 23 August Louis Clarke was fishing at the Corbet and he caught a lovely Rainbow on the spinner. On Thursday 24 August Tom King and Gerard Lyness were out boat fishing on the Corbet Lough and they caught 9 fish between them. Stevie Rea was out in the afternoon and he had 3 fish to the boat. Roy Blake hooked and lost a number of fish before finishing with 2 fish to the boat. On Saturday 26 August the Club’s competition anglers were fishing at the Corbet Lough. The adults were fishing for the Shooter Cup and the juniors were fishing for the Martin Dynes Trophy. At the weigh-in Wilson Clinghan won the Shooter Cup with two lovely fish on the spinner. Colin Crothers and Geoff Hylands were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Xavier Mackle won the Martin Dynes Trophy with a couple of good Rainbows. The Winterburn Anglers held a boat fishing outing on the Corbet Lough. The conditions were very challenging with a strong gusty westerly wind blowing across the Corbet. The anglers caught 11 fish between them and also lost a few cracking fish. On Bank Holiday Monday 28 August there was a big turn out of boat anglers at the Corbet Lough. The conditions were very good with an overcast sky and a gentle westerly wind. Roy Blake was out during the morning and he caught 8 fish. Stevie Ferris was also out in the morning and he had 3 fish to the boat. Geoff Twinen was out in the morning and he caught a couple of nice fish. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields were out for a couple of hours and they had 1 fish. Gary Beattie and juveniles Zach and Ben Beattie had 2 fish to the boat. Gerard Lyness and Tom King were out during the late morning and afternoon and they had 6 fish between them. Brendan Downey was also out during the morning and afternoon and he had 7 fish to the boat. Kenny Bird was out for a couple of hours in the afternoon and he had 2 fish to the boat. Les Patton was also out and he caught 1 fish. In the evening Leonard Ervine and Geoff Hylands were out for a few hours boat fishing and they caught 9 fish on dry daddies. On Tuesday 29 August Adrian Round enjoyed some great fishing on the River Bann using flies he purchased from Kindale Fly Fishing, Dromore. On Thursday 31 August Stevie Rea was out on the Corbet Lough for a boat fishing session. Stevie caught 16 fish. Gerard Lyness and Tom King were also out and they had 6 fish between them.
