Fishing Report – October 2023

BAC – Rainbow trout of 9lbs caught by Davy McGuinness at the Corbet Lough on the fly on 23 September 2023. Davy sportingly returned this fantastic fish.

On Sunday 1 October the Corbet Lough was busy with boat anglers. Philip Rankin enjoyed great sport with 5 fish to the boat. Stevie Ferris also had a good boat session catching 5 fish. Trevor Wylie was out and had a couple of fish to the boat. Alan Dickson and Carl Weathers had a couple of fish between them to the boat. On Monday 2 October Les Patton had a great boat session on the Corbet Lough catching 12 fish up to 6lbs. On Thursday 5 October the conditions on the Corbet were challenging with a strong gusty southerly breeze. Stevie Rea was out boat fishing and he caught 7 fish. Gerard Lyness and Tom King had 7 fish between them to the boat. Brendan Downey had 5 fish all over 3.5lbs to the boat. On Saturday 7 October the Corbet Lough was very busy with the Silver Butchers holding a boat fishing outing, the Club’s competition anglers were on the shore fishing for the Hanlon Cup and there was also a number of pleasure anglers. The Silver Butchers had a great day with 61 fish caught and most of them were returned. The Club’s competition anglers weighed in some great fish. Wilson Clinghan won the Hanlon Cup with a great brace of fish weighing 6lbs 12ozs. Sam Grant and Dessy Graham were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The competition for the Club’s adult Angler of the Year 2023 is very close with Kevin Conwell and Wilson Clinghan leading the way with only 3 weeks left in the season. Juvenile angler Louis Clarke was spinning from the shore and he caught a couple of nice fish. On Tuesday 10 October Wilson Clinghan took a couple of fish on the fly of the Dam Wall at the Corbet Lough. On Thursday 12 October Stevie Rea was boat fishing on the Corbet Lough and he caught 7 fish. Gerard Lyness and Tom King were also out for a boat session and they had 7 fish between them. Les Patton was out boat fishing and he caught a couple of nice fish. On Friday 13 October Brendan Downey was boat fishing on the Corbet and he caught a couple of lovely fish between 3lbs and 4lbs. On Thursday 19 October Gerard Lyness and Tom King were boat fishing on the Corbet Lough and they caught 6 fish between them. On Saturday 21 October the Club’s competition anglers fished at the Corbet Lough for the Hugh Savage Cup. There were some great fish weighed in. Colin Crothers won the Cup with Trevor Jones and Kevin Conwell 2nd and 3rd respectively. Aidan Lavery and Gary McClelland had a great boat session catching 10 fish between them. Gerard Lyness and Tom King were also out and they had a couple of fish to the boat. On Saturday 28 October the Club’s competition anglers were back at the Corbet Lough for the final competition in he 2023 season. They fished for the Woods/McClory Cup which had been postponed earlier in the season. Again the anglers weighed in some great bags of fish. Sam Grant and Noel Burns were joint first. Colin Crothers was 2nd and Geoff Hylands was 3rd. Tom King and Gerard Lyness were out boat fishing and they caught 10 fish between them. On Sunday 29 October Keith Moffitt and Darrell McKinley were boat fishing on the Corbet Lough and they caught 3 fish. On Monday 30 October Wilson Clinghan was fly fishing from the shore at the Corbet Lough and he caught 3 fish up to 3lbs. Tony Kelly was also fly fishing from the shore and he caught a lovely fish of about 3lbs. The season ended with the River unfishable due to a high flood and the Corbet Lough practically unfishable due to very high water levels.
