
On Saturday 2 May the Club hosted the Ulster River Championship on its stretch of the River Bann. The competing anglers caught 214 measurable fish and many more undersize fish. The result and qualifying angers were as follows: 1st Mark Sloan 33 fish, 2nd Andrew Sloan 23 fish, 3rd Stuart McMurran 22 fish, 4th Fintan Carlin 19 fish, 5th Brian Russell 17 fish. Team reserve, Philip Poots. All the fish caught were returned unharmed. On Monday 4 May the Club’s competition anglers were at the Corbet Lough to fish for the Brendan Downey Cup. This was a ‘catch and release’ competition with the result based on the overall length of the angler’s 2 best fish. There was some great fish caught and measured. Leonard Ervine won the Cup with an overall length of 99cms. Dessy Graham and Roger McClements were 2nd and 3rd respectively. The ‘catch and release’ was very successful and very popular with the competing anglers. On Thursday 7 May Gerard Lyness and Tom King were out at the Corbet Lough fishing wets. They had 27 fish to the boat on Dabblers and Bumbles. David McQuade and Paul Martelli had 18 fish up to 4lbs to the boat on diawl bachs and the Red Arsed Green Peter. Stevie Rea and Andy Jackson had 15 fish to the boat on lures and buzzers. Roy Blake had 9 fish to the boat. Michael McKeown had 5 fish to the boat. Stevey McArdle and Jim Kennedy also had 5 fish to the boat on lures and buzzers. The anglers spinning from the shore also caught fish. On Friday 8 May there was 5 boats out on the Corbet Lough. Len Murray and Pat Magee had 10 fish to the boat. Pat was catching on Dabblers and Len caught fish on his black death fly and a diawl back. Stevie Rea also had 10 fish to the boat on lures and buzzers. Martin Hawkins had 8 fish. Stevie Ferris and Jim McClelland had 6 fish to the boat with Jim catching a fantastic Rainbow of 7lbs. Patrick Curran fished dries and he had a fish on the shuttlecock buzzers and hooked and lost a number of other fish. Leonard Ervine and Paul McKinstry caught fish from the shore in the top bay also using shuttlecock buzzers. Ronnie Adair caught 6 fish on the fly from the shore. On Saturday 9 May the conditions at the Corbet Lough were challenging with bright sunshine and a strong breeze. Tom King and Gerard Lyness fished wets and had 21 fish to the boat including a lovely Brown Trout of 3lbs. Mark Neill and Roy Neill had 5 fish to the boat on diawl bachs. Marty Magee had 5 fish to the boat on wets and lures. Dennis Lucas and Roy McKee had a couple of nice fish to the boat. On Sunday 10 May there was two boats out on the Corbet Lough. Philip Rankin had 2 fish. Matthew Cooper and Jamie Cooper also had 2 fish. Paul McKinstry was fishing the fly from the shore and he had 4 fish including a lovely over wintered Rainbow. On Thursday 14 May the conditions at the Corbet Lough were challenging, especially for the boat anglers. However some boat anglers still reported some great catches. Gerard Lyness and Tom King had 43 fish to the boat. Stevie Rea and Andy Jackson had 31 fish to the boat. On Saturday 16 May Paul McKinstry was fly fishing in the top bay and he caught a fantastic Rainbow of about 7lbs. On Monday 18 May it was a wet evening with a strong south/south easterly wind. Dessy Graham was fly fishing at the Corbet Lough and he caught 4 great fish with the best a real bar of silver weighing about 6lbs. On Thursday 21 May the boat anglers enjoyed some great fishing at the Corbet Lough. Tom King and Gerard Lyness had 57 fish to the boat pulling Dabblers and Green Peters on an intermediate line. Stevey McArdle and Jim Kennedy had 33 fish to the boat. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields had 28 to the boat on cormorant boobies. Roy Blake had 22 fish to the boat on blobs and boobies. Les Patton had 8 fish to the boat and Trevor Murray had 4 fish to the boat. On Friday 22 May the boat angling at the Corbet Lough was still fantastic. Stevie Rea had 77 fish to the boat fishing a Melvin Octopus, diawl bach and a lure on an intermediate line. Lenny Murray and Martin Hawkins had 29 fish to the boat on the black death and diawl bachs. Lance McCarthy and Matt Shields had 26 to the boat on a Fiery Brown dabbler and a damsel nymph. Matt had a fantastic fish of over 9lbs. On Saturday 23 May Wes Beattie and Gary Chivers had 48 fish to the boat. Frank Kearney pulled wets and he had 27 fish to the boat. Mark and Roy Neill had 16 fish to the boat on small traditional wet flies. Dennis Lucas and Roy McKee had 13 fish between them to the boat. On Sunday 24 May the Corbet continued to fish well. Wilson Clinghan had 39 fish to the boat by drifting and pulling wets. Philip Rankin and John Lewis had 10 fish between them to the boat. Lance McCarthy and Wesley Hewitt had 6 fish between them to the boat. The shore anglers have also been reporting some great fishing over the past few days. Donald McClearn had over 20 fish during a couple of evenings. Ronnie Adair had 15 fish on Thursday 21 May and 6 on Friday 22 May. Lenny Ervine, Paul McKinstry, George Gallagher and Geoff Hylands have also been reporting some nice fish on the fly. On Saturday evening 30 May the Club’s competition anglers fished the Corbet Lough for the Jim Ledlie Cup. The fishing was challenging. At the final Geoff Hylands won the Cup with 2 lovely fish measuring 94cms. Roger McClements and Sam Grant were 2nd and 3rd respectively. All the fish caught in this competition were returned unharmed. On Sunday 31 May Matthew and Jamie Cooper were boat fishing at the Corbet Lough. They had 9 fish up to about 4 lbs between them on diawl bachs and daddies.
